Claviere in Italy Resort Guide
Right on the Franch Italian border in the Susa valley and an entry point into the Milky Way, Claviere is a good, smaller and cheaper alternative to nearby Montgenevre which is 1km away in France and to which it used to be joined 200 odd years ago. In reality it is no more than a polite enclave of a dozen hotels and pensions which offer good food and, reportedly, cheap local alcohol. Set amidst woodland scenery the facilities include a supermarket and a few smaller shops. There is a natural ice rink and a 15km nordic loop track up to Montgenvre. Lifts access links into Montgenvre to the west and Cesana to the east and the access runs back to the village from both are fairly easy for confident early intermediates and beyond, although the local nursery area by the village is quite compact and a little steep. Apres ski is generally quiet and this makes it an ideal location for those seeking a quiet, relaxing break - yet with the opportunity of accessing the Milky Way's supposed 600kms of terrain and 100 odd lifts. It does get a little busier at the weekends, although queues are rarely a problem, but the through road does get quite busy.
