Samoens in France Resort Guide
The Grand Massif circuit offers over 265kms of skiing between Flaine, Les Carroz, and Samoens. Samoens (720m) is the perfect counterpoint - a small traditional town which has its origins stretching back to the 5th century. It is registered as a historic monument, thanks to the work of its stonemasons, and the town is centred around a renowned botanical garden.
The main slopes are a short bus ride from the centre, but many are north facing and retain a good snow cover. In general skiing nearest Samoens is a little more challenging than the usual Grand Massif fayre, and as such it does not represent the best base for the more cautious intermediate.
The brand new (for winter 2017/18) Club Med, will offer a luxurious standard of accommodation and facilities, in a ski in/out location, above Samoens town, at 1600. Road access drops guests at the door, and - if you'd like to take a walk around the lovely old town - you simply take the GM 1600 gondola down on foot, then either catch one of the regular shuttles from the base of the lifts, or take the 10 minute flat walk into the village.
Accomodation & Après Ski
Apres in Samoens town, is relatively low key, with a few bars, some very good restaurants and coffee shops, plus a good variety of shops. The town is very beautiful with excellent examples of the crafts of the stone masons, for which it has been known for hundreds of years.
