What is there to say about this Ski area – Definitely my favourite ski area of all the numerous ski areas in the World I have visited.
Regarded by many in the Ski Industry as one of the worlds top ski resorts, St. Anton and its neighbouring areas of Lech Zurs and Stuben make up the famous Arlberg ski area and the whole area is steeped in the History and development of Alpine Skiing.
St Anton and Lech are grouped with a lot of other Major resorts such as Chamonix and Zermatt in the Best of The Alps Group of 12 Classic Ski resorts.
The Immediate St Anton am Arlberg area comprises of smaller hamlets such as Nasserein and Pettneu - Born2ski can help you find suitable Accommodation and deals across the whole of the region.
I have been visiting St Anton since 1989 and have witnessed the considerable development of the resort and the ski area. The numerous new chair lifts and magnificent Gondolas that have been introduced in recent years make sure it has one of the most modern lift systems in the world.
The latest being the excellent new Rendlbahn Gondola
St. Anton am Arlberg is a truly unique recreation paradise for the whole family. The cosy little town with 2680 inhabitants has still maintained its genuine ambiance and charming atmosphere. Relax and unwind at the elevation of 1300m where crisp and clean mountain air is guaranteed! Experience genuine Tyrolean hospitality and spend the most beautiful days of the year among friends.
I would have to say I regard the resort as my second home and make a visit each season where I can catch up with the many friends I have that live in the resort. Over the years I have introduced many clients and friends to the wonders of the resort and I would like to impart my extensive knowledge of the resort and its accommodations to help you make a discerning choice to visit.
As the Blur Song goes: which always sets the mood whenever I arrive in Anton:
Take a look at the Born2ski Search facility to find suitable St Anton Hotels, St Anton Chalets and also Hotels and Chalets in all the other Arlberg areas such as Lech or alternatively give me a call with your St Anton enquiry to get my personal service

Something that St Anton is renowned for and it takes some beating – with Some of the main bars on the mountain home run to the Village – Including the famous Krazy Kangaruh and Mooserwirt – that have to be visited during any stay – be amazed at the number of skis on the piste as you ski up to them – just follow the music – DJ Gerhard in the Mooserwirt will serve up all the latest Euro tunes you have the energy to dance to. For a more relaxed après and also on the Mountain – go visit two of my favourites – Taps bar and the Griabli – also a great location for lunch or a meal after après..
In the main St Anton village try the Underground and Post Keller – and again to have a drink after dinner try the Jacksy’s bar in the Village and also Tom Dooley’s in the Nasserein area.
I have been visiting St Anton since 1989 and spent 3 seasons working in the resort.

The history of skiing in St. Anton am Arlberg
Foundation of the Arlberg Ski Club (1901), the first ski race (1904),
the first ski school (1921) and the Arlberg-Kandahar Race (1928)
Tourism on the Arlberg dates back to the 19th century. But it was not until the advent of Alpine skiing, pioneered to a large extent by men from the Arlberg, that the region acquired the outstanding reputation it still enjoys today as a winter sports centre. Hannes Schneider was one of the foremost figures in the early days of skiing and starred in the films directed by Arnold Fanck which did a great deal to popularize the Arlberg. In the decades that followed a succession of great skiers made the Arlberg a household word for the best in skiing.
THE WORLD FAMOUS APRES SKI
There is a range of bars and clubs in St Anton to suit all tastes, with the lively Krazy Kangaroo Bar and the Mooserwirt Bar on the slopes, or the sophisticated hotel bars for a more subdued evening.
Alternatives to skiing include sledding, horse drawn sleigh rides, curling, snow shoeing, swimming, ice skating, tennis and squash.

OTHER RESORTS IN THE ARLBERG SKI AREA
Having spent a few seasons ski guiding around Lech and Zurs I can only describe the area as Picture postcard Austria – with some superb top quality Hotels bars and restaurants. Situated at 1450m with access to over 260km of pistes, Lech has an excellent snow record and is suitable to skiers of all abilities and especially recommended for families and couples.
The resort itself is pretty compact with most facilities close to hand. The centre of the resort has a number of shops that can be accessed via the riverside paths that form part of the winter walking trail network in Lech am Arlberg.
The skiing in the combined Lech-Zurs ski area - ideal for families with tree-lined skiing lower down and plenty of gentle intermediate skiing in the area.
The area is famous for its great snow record and usually has one of the best snow accumulations in the Alps – with world renowned ski schools and fantastic Off Piste Ski opportunities – It is definitely one resort I can recommend to all my customers.
An excellent change or first time Austrian ski area for all those that just ski in France.
Try it – you will love it.
You can also access Lech if staying in St Anton - on the Free Ski bus from the bottom of Alpe Rauze run in St Anton. Available on the Arlberg Lift pass.
Resort Height 1450m | Top Lift 2811m | Lifts 84
Great intermediate ski area, superb snow record and Heli-skiing operating out of the resort.
There are a couple of ski school options in Lech am Arlberg:
Ski School Lech, A-6764 Lech, Tel. 05583 / 2355, Fax 05583 / 3849
Ski School Omeshorn-Alpincenter, Dorf 443, 6764 Lech, Tel. 05583 / 39880
Though not the Après Mecca that is St Anton – Lech can still offer some excellent bars and more notably some award winning restaurants. There is a good après-ski scene in the village on of chic bars including the Tannbergerhof with its afternoon disco and the Fux Bar which has live music and pop art in the toilets! For the later revellers there is a night club called Side Step which specialises in 60’s and 70’s music.
Oberlech has slope side terraces for food and drink. And is ideal for a leisurely lunch – my favourite is the Mohnenfluh Restaurant.
Blue Runs 105km
Red Runs 140km
Black Runs 30km
The nursery slopes in Oberlech are a place to start, before progressing onto the numerous nearby easy slopes.
Lech offers access to the 'White Ring', a 22 km circuit of cruisy red and blue runs connected by a series of lifts, making it ideal for intermediate skiers.
Off piste is definitely the order of the day for more advanced skiers. Hire a guide and enjoy the excellent terrain in the area, with the option of spending a day over in St Anton for further challenges. Heli-lifts are available to some remote spots.
The facilities open to snowboarders have developed in recent years, with a terrain park at the Schlegelkopf, which includes a children's section. Minimal drag lifts suit beginners, while the well-maintained pistes and excellent powder routes, make Lech the perfect choice for intermediates and advanced boarders. Heli-lifts are available to some remote spots.
Alternatives to skiing include paragliding; ice climbing, ice skating, curling, horse drawn sleigh rides, swimming, tennis and squash. For a special treat why not pay a visit to the Strolz department store where they make made-to-measure ski boots by hand.

Lech & Zug
Zürs is one of the best loved winter sports resorts in the world. Boasting a vast high altitude domain of over 250km of piste, the village offers everything you could want from a winter sports holiday - including high quality hotels, fine dining and great après ski.
The village is full of international flavour, attracting a wide scope of visitors from all over the world - including royalty! The 'Arlberg Ski Circus' lift pass covers the resorts of Zürs, Lech, Zug, Stuben, St. Anton, Sonnenkopf and St. Christoph.
Zürs offers gentle nursery slopes, which are located beside the village centre. Long, wide, groomed blue runs are the order of the day.
Tremendous terrain for the intermediate skier with countless opportunities. With its amazing ski-in/ski-out location this area offers a huge variety of blue and red runs.
The best and the most challenging off-piste skiing can be found in Zürs with plenty of testing black runs and routes.
The Schlegelkopf-Hang is the home of the 'Boarderland Lech' - an ambitiously constructed slope paradise for snowboarders. The terrain - almost exclusively connected by chairlifts - offers opportunities to train and to show off with 1.2km of pipes, jumps and slides.
- Roof-top Curling - Indoor golf - Winter walks - Tobogganing - Squash
There are over 20 restaurants available, from cosy inns to well-known gourmet restaurants, some with international awards.

Village Height: St. Christoph:1800m
St. Christoph is at the heart of the vast Arlberg Ski-Circus, and deservedly rated as one of the finest resorts in the Alps for doorstep skiing. The Hospiz Alm is one of the area's mountain restaurants. With a range of excellent hotels endowed with luxurious health and spa facilities and gourmet dining, it is a perfect place to spend a relaxing holiday whilst enjoying some of the best skiing in the Alps.
This is a small hamlet where people enjoy doorstep access to the pistes and evenings dining on fine cuisine. For most non-skiing/boarding activities you will need to head to St. Anton, 6km from St. Christoph.
Located just off the main Arlberg Pass and often overlooked by visitors to St Anton, Lech and Zurs, the ski holiday resort of Stuben has many things going for it, including an attractive compact village, great access to the ski area above St Anton and of course the legendary snow record of the Arlberg.
I can personally recommend a visit to this off piste Gem – with the legendary North Face and one of my favourite routes anywhere I have skied – the Route to Langen am Arlberg – and catching the train back to St Anton after a breathtaking
The attractive resort of Stuben offers intimacy and peace far removed from St Anton and yet is located with lift access to the St Anton ski area, the best in Austria. Further options include the hugely impressive Lech and Zurs ski areas that can be reached with the regular ski buses. The Stuben ski area consists of a small ski area with a beginners section and a chairlift up the local peak. From there skiers can descend into the far reaches of the St Anton ski area and very possibly access the main area beneath the Valluga as fast as those skiers coming from the village of St Anton. The Stuben ski area joins the St Anton area via a skiable bridge across the Arlberg Pass road. From there a short drag and a modern, fast chair take skiers and boarders to the heart of the St Anton ski area. Back country / ski touring and off-piste guided descents are offered from many outlets in Stuben. Whilst Stuben is a small village compared to others in the Arlberg it has an interesting selection of small restaurants and bars in its charming centre.
In winter, Pettneu and Schnann offer a short and direct connection to the Arlberg ski area with their free ski bus (transfer time: 8 - 12 minutes). Pettneu's ski area, with 15 km of descents in all grades of difficulty, is especially family-friendly and integrated into the Arlberg Skipass.
This idyllic village in the heart of the Stanzer Valley is nestled in the lap of the Lechtal Alps. On a guided ski tour, you can explore the mountains around the town; or enjoy the silent magic of an evening snowshoe hike; or conquer the boulder wall in the climbing hall. The Arlberg ski area is reached quickly and easily on the free ski bus.
Right at the entrance to the Stanzer Valley, its immense variety is immediately visible: Strengen will make an impression of a typical ancient Roman settlement, lying on the centuries-old Roman road to the Arlberg. Skiing in Strengen means first climbing on your own steam before enjoying the superb downhill descent. The ascent to the Dawin ski hut is a genuine treat even for experienced tour lovers - and crowning it all is the magnificent descent.
"The White Thrill" - April 25th, 2009 DER WEISSE RAUSCH
The spring sporting highlight - "The White Thrill", - several hundred skiers, Snowboarders, Bigfooters and Telemarkers meet on the Valluga at 2650 meters for the mass start.
"The White Thrill" is also the first stage of the alpine triathlon "Arlberg Eagle". Whoever would like to hold the popular winner trophy high in his hands in the late summer must be ahead of the field in the ski race, in the half marathon in July and in the mountain-bike marathon in August.

MR D TILT Birmingham Comments:
We first approached Mike five years ago looking for a snow sure, lively resort that catered for all levels and offered some unmissable deals and we weren't disappointed with what we got. Mike was able to use his many contacts to secure us a room at Chalet Jennewein which was ideally situated for lift access, a short walk into town and, soon we found, open to the possibility of a ski home after a night at the legendary après ski bars - the Krazy Kanguruh and the Mooserwirt.
With Lech and Zurs around the corner the available ski area is enormous - able to support beginners, and to offer challenges to even the most seasoned skier. You can't possibly see it all in a week, which probably explains why we've been back five times already. You must try the long run down to Stuben, the restaurant in St Christoph where they have a purpose built slide to take you to the toilets, at least a day in Lech and Zurs, take a leisurely ski up at Rendl Beach and finish off your day skiing down Kandahar before beginning your assault on the après ski bars. If you're brave enough you can tackle the short ski down from the Krazy Kanguruh after a few Weiss biers or some shots but be careful !!! Stop off for dinner, warm up and hit the town. Aside from its picture postcard beauty St Anton is a real party town with more late night bars and clubs than you can shake a stick at. If that's not your scene why not try a sauna at the wellness centre - but beware, clothes are not allowed in Austrian saunas !!!
Mike introduced us to all of this when he met up with us for our first week at St Anton which added a real personal touch. Since then he's accompanied us on almost every one of our holidays and introduced us to lots of interesting people, and with his contacts has opened doors to the most unbelievable deals. It is strong testament indeed to Mike's attention to customer satisfaction that he has become one of our best friends. I haven't booked a holiday through anyone else for years - and neither would I want to. Book with any of the big companies and you risk sacrificing a quality holiday to put more of your money in their pockets. Book with Mike and he'll bend over backwards to make sure it's a holiday you'll never forget. And if you're really lucky you'll meet up with us regulars too !!!
